Mumbai, 19th June, 2022: Abu Talha Ansa ri's joy knew no bounds when he secured 83.4% in SSC, results of which were announced on Friday. But there is another reason for him to be glad. He has com pleted his hafiz course (me morisation of Quran) too.

He is among 22 huffaz (plural of hafiz) or hafizs from Malvani (Malad)-based Jamia Tajveedul Quran Ma drassa and Noor Meher Urdu School, run from the same building, who have cleared the SSC exam this year. "Out of 22 huffaz who took SSC ex am this year, 14 passed with distinction while eight have got above 60% marks. We are glad our students have done so well," says school-madrassa founder Syed Ali. Many people use their additional home as "holiday home" or rent out to earn ex tra money. But Ali, popular as Ali bhai, a businessman, turned his bungalow into an educational institution. Be ginning in 2000, the school and madrassa produced its first batch of SSC pass outs with 13 hafizs in 2011. In the last one decade, it has pro duced 97 hafizs who also cleared SSC. "A couple of our hafizs are now engineers, doctors and pharmacists," says Ali Bhai.

The debate to modernise madrassa education is old one. Most madrassas are re luctant to introduce modern subjects like science in their curricula. However, experi ment done by Ali Bhai shows a way forward.
