Kejriwal Attacked During Padyatra in Greater Kailash

NEW DELHI, 30 Nov. 2024: On Saturday, former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal was attacked while leading a padyatra in the Greater Kailash locality. The assailant threw a liquid at Kejriwal, but the situation was quickly controlled by his security team, preventing further escalation.

In response, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) strongly condemned the attack, citing growing concerns over the safety and law and order in the capital. "If a former Chief Minister is not safe in Delhi, how can the common citizen expect to be?" the AAP party questioned, that the city was witnessing a complete collapse of law and order under the BJP government.

Allegations of Malicious Intent: Kejriwal’s Safety at Risk

Following the attack, Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj speculated that the assailant may have thrown an inflammable substance, such as spirit, with the intention of setting Kejriwal on fire. Bharadwaj also suggested that the attacker had possible connections to the BJP, fueling suspicions of a politically motivated assault.

This incident echoes a similar attack in October when AAP accused BJP supporters of targeting Kejriwal during a rally. The AAP has been vocal in accusing the BJP of orchestrating disturbances at its events, further escalating tensions between the two parties.

BJP Dismisses Attack, Calls It a “Political Stunt”

The Delhi BJP was quick to downplay the incident, labeling it a “political drama” orchestrated by Kejriwal himself for electoral gains. BJP Delhi President Virendraa Sachdeva dismissed the attack as theatrics, claiming that the liquid thrown was merely water, and the assailant was reportedly intoxicated.

BJP MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat provided a different explanation, pointing out that such incidents are inevitable during padyatras, where leaders engage closely with the public. “These types of incidents occur due to public frustration over issues like poor infrastructure, overflowing drains, and pollution,” Sehrawat said, suggesting that the attack was more a reflection of local grievances than a political conspiracy.

Kejriwal’s History of Attacks: A Pattern of Intimidation

This attack is far from the first one aimed at Kejriwal. In 2016, while attending a condolence meeting in Bikaner, Rajasthan, Kejriwal was attacked with ink. Over the years, Kejriwal has faced multiple such attacks, highlighting the ongoing tension surrounding his leadership and his often confrontational political style. As the Delhi elections approach, these incidents are attracting increased scrutiny.

AAP Intensifies Campaigning as Elections Draw Near

With the Delhi Assembly elections just months away, AAP has ramped up its efforts to connect with voters, with a particular focus on grassroots campaigning. Kejriwal, along with senior party leaders, has been actively participating in padyatras across the city to strengthen the party’s presence ahead of the polls.

During one such padyatra on Friday, Kejriwal announced the launch of the ‘Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana,’ a welfare scheme providing a monthly honorarium of Rs 1,000 to women. He also used the occasion to criticize the BJP for its failure to ensure basic public services, such as consistent electricity, quality healthcare, and good education, in the states it governs.

Political Tensions Rise as Delhi Elections Loom

As the Delhi elections approach, the political rivalry between AAP and BJP has reached new heights. Kejriwal continues to push his party’s agenda focused on social welfare and effective governance, while the BJP counters with accusations of mismanagement and corruption within the AAP government.

The latest attack on Kejriwal, coming amid rising political tensions, is likely to further inflame the already heated electoral battle in the capital. With both parties gearing up for a fiercely contested election, the coming months will be marked by increasingly intense political maneuvering and campaigning.
