Bandipora, Jammu & Kashmir – August 30, 2025 : A massive fire broke out late Friday night in the remote Tulail area of Gurez in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, leading to extensive damage and injuries. The incident, described as one of the most severe fire disasters in the region in recent years, left the entire community in shock.
According to local officials, the fire engulfed at least 20 residential and commercial structures, many of them made of traditional wood and mud. These structures were closely packed, making it easier for the flames to spread rapidly through the neighborhood. In the wake of the fire, 25 people were reported injured, including the Station House Officer (SHO) of Gurez, who was actively involved in the rescue operations.
Community Wakes to Chaos
The blaze reportedly began around midnight, catching most residents off-guard while they were asleep. Within minutes, the fire had consumed multiple buildings, sending thick plumes of smoke into the night sky. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and panic as families scrambled to evacuate their homes, many carrying children, elders, and essential belongings.
As the fire spread, loud cries for help echoed through the narrow lanes of Tulail. Neighbors joined hands in an attempt to control the flames using buckets of water, sand, and fire extinguishers where available. However, due to the lack of immediate fire-fighting infrastructure in the remote valley, the blaze quickly escalated beyond local control.
Swift Response by Emergency Services
Despite the remoteness and challenging terrain of Gurez, a coordinated effort by the Fire and Emergency Services, Jammu and Kashmir Police, Indian Army, and local volunteers was launched within a short time. Fire engines were dispatched from the nearest stations, and despite the rough and mountainous roads, emergency responders reached the site as fast as possible.
The firefighting operation continued throughout the night under difficult conditions. With limited water sources, freezing night temperatures, and narrow alleys, firefighters had to rely on both manpower and improvisation to contain the fire. The Indian Army also deployed resources and personnel to support the rescue and containment efforts.
After several intense hours, the flames were finally brought under control in the early hours of Saturday morning.
25 People Injured, Including Police Officer
Among the injured were civilians and security personnel, including SHO Gurez, who sustained minor injuries while helping evacuate trapped residents. Many of the injured suffered from burns, smoke inhalation, and minor fractures caused during the chaos.
All injured individuals were transported to nearby medical facilities, including the district hospital in Bandipora. According to health officials, most of them are in stable condition, although a few are under close observation.
Dozens Left Homeless
The fire left dozens of families displaced, having lost not only their homes but also their businesses and personal belongings. As the flames destroyed homes, shops, and community buildings, the emotional toll on the residents became evident.
One local resident, Abdul Rashid, whose home and shop were completely gutted, described the experience:
“We have lost everything in just a few hours. We had no time to save anything. Now we are left with nothing but the clothes we were wearing.”
Government Response and Relief Measures
Following the incident, Bandipora district administration launched immediate relief and rehabilitation efforts. Temporary shelters were set up for affected families, and basic necessities including food, warm clothing, and medical supplies were distributed.
Deputy Commissioner Bandipora stated:
“We are committed to ensuring that all affected families receive timely support. Assessment teams are already on the ground evaluating the extent of the damage so that compensation and assistance can be provided without delay.”
Local NGOs and volunteer groups have also stepped in to provide relief materials and emotional support to the victims.
Investigation Underway
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Preliminary reports suggest that a short circuit or a kitchen fire might have triggered the blaze, but officials have not confirmed any specific cause yet.
A team from the fire department and forensic experts has been dispatched to the site to gather evidence and interview witnesses. The investigation is expected to provide clarity in the coming days.
Long-Term Impact and the Need for Preparedness
This tragic incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of remote mountain regions like Gurez to disasters. The lack of accessible fire-fighting infrastructure, poor connectivity, and traditional wooden architecture make such areas especially prone to fires.
Local leaders and civil society members are calling on the government to improve infrastructure, set up local fire stations, and conduct fire safety awareness programs to better prepare residents for such emergencies in the future.
While the community is slowly beginning to recover from the shock, the scars left behind by the flames—both physical and emotional—will take much longer to heal.
