Public Outcry Grows Over Student Beating at Presentation Convent; Nayeema Mehjoor Demands Probe, Urges GN Var to Intervene

.Srinagar, June 11 (IT) — A deeply disturbing case of alleged physical abuse inside Presentation Convent Higher Secondary School in Srinagar has triggered widespread public outrage, with calls for strict action against the teachers involved and the school management.

The victim, Ayaat Altaf, a third-grade student and daughter of Mohammad Altaf Dar, was reportedly beaten mercilessly by her teachers within the school premises.Despite the severity of the assault, no immediate medical attention was provided by the school authorities.

Parents were allegedly informed late, and by the time the child reached home, she was vomiting, drifting in and out of consciousness, and unable to open her eyes — clear signs of trauma requiring urgent hospitalization. The school’s failure to respond with basic medical care has intensified public fury, with many describing the negligence as criminal. The incident, now widely discussed on social media, has drawn strong condemnation from across the Valley.

Among those speaking out is senior journalist and former Chairperson of the J&K Women’s Commission, Nayeema Ahmed Mehjoor, who in a strongly worded post wrote: “What the hell is going on in the school? The matter needs proper investigation and immediate medical treatment for the girl. G N Var must come forward and get it resolved.”

The public sentiment is clear and unforgiving. Citizens across Jammu and Kashmir are demanding immediate arrest of the teachers involved and a criminal case against the school authorities for gross negligence and violation of child rights. Many are also urging the government to cancel the registration of the school to set a precedent that such brutality in the name of discipline will not be tolerated in any educational institution. There is growing pressure on G.N. Var, President of the Private Schools Association of J&K, to break his silence and ensure that the school is held accountable. For years, private schools in the region have operated with little oversight when it comes to student safety. This incident has become a flashpoint in the debate over unchecked power and lack of accountability in the private education sector.

As the victim’s condition remains a matter of concern, the silence of the school and the education authorities is only deepening public mistrust. The demand is not just for justice in this one case — but for systemic accountability. The people of Kashmir are watching, and this time, they will not settle for half-measures.
