Rahul Gandhi’s Germany Visit Sparks BJP Allegations: What Is the Controversy About?

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is currently on a visit to Germany, has once again come under sharp attack from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP has accused him of meeting “enemies of the nation” and allegedly conspiring against India during his foreign visit. The allegation was made by BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia, who questioned Rahul Gandhi’s meeting with the President of the Berlin-based Hertie School.

On Saturday, the BJP intensified its criticism, asking what kind of “conspiracy” the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha was allegedly plotting by engaging with such individuals and institutions abroad. The party specifically raised concerns over Rahul Gandhi’s interaction with a senior academic figure in Germany.

At a press conference held at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, Gaurav Bhatia displayed what he described as a photograph of Rahul Gandhi with Professor Cornelia Woll, President of the Hertie School in Berlin. Bhatia termed this as “evidence” of the Congress leader’s engagement with what he called “anti-India forces” in Germany.

Bhatia further claimed that Professor Woll is associated as a trustee with the Central European University, which he alleged receives funding from the Open Society Foundations linked to American billionaire investor George Soros. Based on this association, the BJP alleged that Rahul Gandhi was interacting with forces working against India’s interests. At the time of reporting, there was no immediate response from Rahul Gandhi or the Congress party regarding these claims.

Earlier during his Germany visit, Rahul Gandhi had spoken about the state of manufacturing in India. On Wednesday, December 17, after visiting BMW Welt and the BMW Plant in Munich, he stated that manufacturing forms the backbone of strong economies but is witnessing a decline in India. In an Instagram post, he emphasized the need for India to build a robust and meaningful manufacturing ecosystem to drive economic growth.

The BJP strongly objected to these remarks, branding them as “anti-India.” Party leaders countered Rahul Gandhi’s claims by asserting that manufacturing and production in the country are continuously increasing. BJP leader Sambit Patra criticized Rahul Gandhi, stating that responsibility and Rahul Gandhi cannot coexist. He further alleged that the Congress leader’s frequent foreign visits and statements made overseas undermine India’s image and reflect the mindset of both Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party.
