JK – Bhaderwah, Aug 15: Like the rest of the nation, the picturesque Bhaderwah Valley celebrated the 79th Independence Day with patriotic splendour, while also paying heartfelt homage to the victims of the recent Chosoti Paddar cloudburst.
Under the leadership of Additional Deputy Commissioner Doda, Sh. Anil Kumar Thakur, the celebrations began with the unfurling of the Tricolour, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. A grand parade, featuring contingents of security forces and school students, reflected the spirit of unity, discipline, and national pride. Inspiring speeches highlighted the ideals of freedom, harmony, and collective responsibility in nation-building.
A poignant two-minute silence was observed to honour those who lost their lives in the devastating natural disaster. Tehsildar Bhaderwah, Kamalpreet Singh (KAS), delivered the vote of thanks, acknowledging the dedication of all participants and the cooperation of citizens in making the event memorable.

Across the Chenab region, Independence Day was marked with equal zeal. At the Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Bhaderwah, staff led by Block Medical Officer Dr. Varsha Kotwal began the day with a solemn two-minute silence to pay tribute to the victims. Condolences were extended to the bereaved families, reaffirming the community’s solidarity during this time of grief.
It is notable that on August 14, more than 60 people lost their lives, over 150 were injured, and dozens remain missing after flash floods triggered by a cloudburst struck Paddar’s Chosoti village in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir. The tragedy has plunged the entire Union Territory into mourning, with large-scale rescue operations underway to trace the missing.

The celebrations in Bhaderwah not only radiated patriotic pride but also showcased the valley’s enduring resilience in the face of tragedy.
