JK- Budgam, Nov. 3 (ITN): A fresh phase of political uncertainty appears to be unfolding in Jammu and Kashmir following Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi’s announcement of resignation from the Lok Sabha and the National Conference, triggering questions over the stability and credibility of the ruling political establishment.
Ruhullah made the announcement on Tuesday, choosing the 26th death anniversary of his father to declare his political separation from the party. He also asked Muhammad Ashraf Mattoo, father of Tutail Mattoo, who was killed in alleged police firing in 2010 during the Omar Abdullah-led government, to hand over his resignation to NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah.

Launching a sharp attack on the party leadership, Ruhullah accused it of betraying the public mandate secured in the 2024 Assembly elections and compromising the political dignity and aspirations of the people. He alleged that the leadership had failed to uphold its commitments and had become disconnected from the expectations of its electorate.
The development comes amid growing political debate over the widening gap between electoral promises and governance realities in Jammu and Kashmir. From restoration of statehood and employment opportunities to protection of land and jobs, political parties have repeatedly made commitments to the people, but several key expectations remain unfulfilled.
Ruhullah’s announcement could therefore have implications beyond the National Conference, potentially opening a new chapter of political realignments and opposition mobilisation in the Union Territory.
While it remains to be seen whether his move develops into a broader political challenge, the episode has once again brought a fundamental question to the forefront: Will Kashmir’s political leadership deliver on its promises, or will public mandates continue to become instruments of political power rather than accountability?
For the moment, the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir appears to be entering an uncertain phase, with the possibility of significant political changes in the coming days.
