Jammu Aug 15 (ITN): A tragic road accident claimed five lives after a Mahindra Scorpio plunged into the Chenab River in the Dachhan area of Kishtwar district on Saturday morning, officials said.
The accident occurred when the Scorpio, bearing registration number HR29AG-0648, was reportedly on its way from Yainwan, Dangdaroo to Sounder.
According to officials, the vehicle suddenly lost control, skidded off the road and plunged into the turbulent river waters.
A joint rescue and recovery operation was immediately launched by police with the assistance of local residents.
Five bodies have been recovered from the wreckage so far, officials said. The number of people travelling in the vehicle has not yet been established.
Authorities are working to ascertain the identities of those killed and determine the circumstances leading to the accident. Police have taken cognisance of the incident and recovery efforts remain underway.
