National Thalassemia Welfare Society in association with University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS), Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital (GTBH), PFPS India, World Patients Alliance and IDEAS organized a workshop to mark 8th World Patient Safety Day at UCMS. The focus of the workshop was on “Safe Care for Non-communicable Diseases”
It was inaugurated by Dr RK Pathni Advisor Quality and Patient Safety NHSRC. Dr R K Pathni in his address said we have to work together for patient safety, wrong diagnosis and wrong medicines increase morbidity and mortality adding cost and trauma to the patient, family and caregiver.
Principal UCMS Dr Dheeraj Shah while welcoming the dignitaries said “First, do no harm” is the foundational principle of Patient safety defined as the absence of preventable harm to a patient during health care. Policy and SOPs should not be only on papers but implemented in letter and spirt.
Dr JS Arora member, WHO Advisory Group Patients for Patient Safety Program in his address said that Objectives of World Patient Safety Day 2026 are to Raise global awareness of patient safety challenges associated with NCDs across the continuum of care through a primary health care approach.

World Patient Safety Day is one of WHO’s global public health days established in 2019 by World Health Assembly. Its objectives are to increase public awareness and engagement, enhance global understanding, and work towards global solidarity and action by Member States to promote patient safety.
Each year, a new theme is selected to highlight a priority patient safety area for action. Ensuring safe care for patients is a fundamental priority, ‘Safe care for Non-communicable Diseases” has been selected as the theme for World Patient Safety Day (WPSD) 2026. Under the slogan “Safe care for life!”,
Dr Sanjiv Kumar former Executive Director, National Health Systems Resource Centre, MoHFW, New Delhi said that every day is patient safety day. Patient safety is a duty and responsibility of every one including Doctors, Nurses, supportive staff, caregivers and patient himself.
Mrs. Vinita Srivastava said that SOPs for the hospital should be formed by the committees in the hospital. Hospital should give their plans to the government for formulating policies.

A poster competition was organized to arouse the bright minds of young medical professionals to craft their ideas on A) Stop Today – Safe Tomorrow and B) Self Care – Safe Care in NCDs. Two best posters in each group were awarded with certificate & cash prizes; all others were given appreciation certificate.
Around 120 Residents Doctors, Undergraduate & Postgraduate students, Nurses & Nursing students. Patients and caregivers of NCDs participated in the workshop.
