JK-Ladakh, sept. 18 (ITN) : Two labourers were killed and three others sustained injuries after loose soil collapsed during an ongoing road construction project near Jingchan under Leh jurisdiction on Thursday, official sources said.
The tragic incident occurred during the construction of a road leading to Ralakung village in Zanskar. The infrastructure project is being executed under the supervision of the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department, Zanskar. A sudden collapse of loose soil led to a major landslide, trapping the labourers under massive debris.
Following the accident, a joint rescue operation was swiftly launched by the Ladakh Police personnel from Zanskar Police Station alongside the Tungri Rescue Team. The local rescue units were heavily assisted by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Indian Army. Following sustained efforts, the bodies of the two buried labourers were recovered from the site. Police personnel from the Leh jurisdiction also reached the spot subsequently, sources added.
The deceased have been identified as Abdul Hamid (24), son of Mohd Safi, and Pawan Kumar (26). Both were residents of the Kishtwar district.
Three other workers who sustained injuries were immediately evacuated and shifted to a nearby medical facility for treatment. They have been identified as Ghulam Mohd (35), son of Mohd Ramzan; Omar Wani, son of Zohar Ahmed; and Muneeb Bashir, son of Bashir Ahmed, all residents of Kishtwar. Officials confirmed that Muneeb Bashir is currently in a stable condition.
According to preliminary reports, all the victims were employed under a Jammu & Kashmir-based contractor engaged to carry out the road construction project.
