Five accused named in 14-kanal land case; key accused remains in jail

Srinagar, Oct 29 (CNS): The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) Kashmir of Crime Branch J&K has filed a second chargesheet against five accused in an alleged migrant land fraud involving 14 kanals and 3 marlas of land valued at over ₹1 crore in Baramulla district.

According to an official handout, the chargesheet in FIR No. 34/2017 has been presented before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Sopore, under Sections 419, 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B of the RPC.

The case concerns land owned by Jawahar Lal Bhat at Wussan, Goshbugh, Pattan. The complainant alleged that over ₹1 crore was paid for the property, but possession was never handed over and the money was not recovered.

Investigators allegedly found evidence of impersonation, forged identity documents and misuse of a Power of Attorney in the purported fraudulent transaction.

The accused named in the chargesheet include Brij Nath, Ghulam Mohi-Ud-Din Dar, Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh, Zahoor Ahmed Dar and Reyaz Ahmad Rather.

The EOW said Brij Nath, who allegedly used multiple aliases, and Ghulam Mohi-Ud-Din Dar were arrested in September. While Dar has obtained bail, Brij Nath remains lodged in Central Jail. Investigations into other cases involving the accused are also continuing.

The agency had earlier filed a chargesheet in August 2023 in another case against Brij Nath and Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh.

The SSP EOW Kashmir has urged people to verify ownership documents, revenue records and other legal papers before entering into property transactions to avoid fraud and financial losses.
